On November 16, 2024, the New Rizal Library echoed with applause as we gathered for this year’s homecoming event, “Bring ME Back Home.” It was an evening dedicated to not only celebrating and reminiscing but also recognizing leaders who exemplify the spirit of being "Men and Women for Others." One of the highlights of the night? Paying tribute to this year’s Hall of FAME awardees—two extraordinary individuals whose impact in business and society is nothing short of transformative.
A Legacy of Impact
The Hall of FAME, established in 2009, serves as a testament to those Management Engineering (ME) alumni who not only excel in their fields but also embody ethical business practices and drive societal change. As Nobel laureate Amartya Sen said, “Economic growth without investment in human development is unsustainable—and unethical.” Our honorees have lived by this principle, balancing business success with a steadfast commitment to societal impact.
This year, we celebrated two formidable leaders:
Benel Dela Paz Lagua (ME Batch 1977)
Benel Lagua stands out for his revolutionary contributions to Philippine finance. As Executive Vice President at the Development Bank of the Philippines and later at Small Business Corporation, he significantly enhanced financial inclusivity. By expanding DBP’s loan portfolio by 285% and achieving a 250% growth in SBC’s financial base, Benel made financing more accessible to MSMEs—enabling countless entrepreneurs to launch and sustain their businesses.
Benel's pioneering work in risk-based lending shifted the paradigm from collateral to cash flow, revolutionizing how small businesses access credit. His dedication went beyond numbers; he championed employee welfare and advanced CSR programs focused on sustainability, illustrating a career marked by true public service. Over 42 years, Benel epitomized the values of inclusive economic progress.
Sam Christopher Lim (ME Batch 2003)
More commonly known as Chris, Sam Christopher Lim is the youngest ever Hall of FAME inductee. His trailblazing influence in the franchise industry underscores a mission rooted in nation-building through job creation. After ascending global ranks at Unilever, Chris revitalized Francorp upon returning to the Philippines. Under his stewardship, brands like The Generics Pharmacy and Shawarma Shack scaled nationwide, generating thousands of jobs. His innovative strategies expanded Francorp’s reach, with more than half of its clients now operating outside Metro Manila.
Beyond Francorp, Chris heads U-Franchise, the Philippines' largest franchise brokerage, and founded ActionCOACH Philippines to empower MSMEs through business coaching. As Chairman of the Philippine Franchise Association, he has cemented the country's role as Asia’s Franchise Hub. Recognized with the Agora Award for Entrepreneurship in 2019 and Xavier Alumni Excellence in 2023, Chris’ efforts tie over 2 million jobs to the franchise industry, painting a legacy that inspires future generations.
Inspiring Future Leaders
These distinguished honorees join the ranks of 20 prior awardees in the Hall of FAME. Their journeys inspire current and future ME graduates to pursue excellence with purpose. Both Benel and Chris showcase how successful careers can ignite transformative community change, leaving a lasting impact on society.
